Charting/Scouting Reports

There is something to be said about understanding your opponents strengths and weaknesses and what they tend to do throughout games. These factors play a big role into a scouting report and game plan. It doesn't take top talent in the state to chart and recognize what opponents do really well and what they struggle with. By understanding these factors it gives us an advantage that not everyone has - by forcing our opponents to play to their weaknesses which a lot of high school athletes struggle with. Below are just a few of the charts and scouting reports we've used in the past to be successful.

Overview Page SR.png

This is what the front page of our typical scouting report looks like when finished, this page contains an overview/key details of each aspect of the scouted team. This gives our team a rundown of what to expect when competing against our competition.

After this front page is a detailed rundown of each player's strengths and weaknesses, which can be used to gain advantages over various competition.

This page is attached to our finished scouting report, which contains our plan of attack towards hitters. This report is constructed based on scouted at bats, spray charts, and swing patterns. This information gives us a solid plan of attack on how to pitch to each batter based on their strengths and weaknesses. Each batter is highlighted with a different color based on the level of threat they present when hitting.

Once a hitting report is finished, we tend to have both a Varsity and JV list of hitters which we have access to while calling pitches.

Defensive Pos._LI.jpg

This is another portion of our scouting report which informs our players where to position themselves based on hitter's tendencies. Very similar to the shifting seen in the Major League's, we position our defenders to areas of the field which have the highest probability of balls being hit.

This is a great tool for our defenders (especially ones with limited range) as this limits the likelihood of having to cover larger areas of the field.

Opposing Pitchers.png

This is one of our charts that allows our players to track data of opposing pitchers. All of the sections/questions tracked in this chart are very guided allowing for various players to complete this chart with similar results/data gathered.

What makes this chart so valuable is we're able to gather the opposing pitcher's pitch types, pickoff tendencies, arm slot, tempo, and pitch tipping. All of which can be used to formulate a plan of attack for our hitters.

2-3 Data.png

This is one of our charts that allows us to track how well our pitchers' are executing our game plan and pitching philosophy. With our pitchers we are very high on executing a "First Pitch Strike" (FPS), and throwing 2 strikes out of our first 3 pitches (2/3 Law).

Below our created FPS and 2/3 Chart is evidence to support this philosophy. During the 2018 D1 College Baseball season, a company called 6-4-3 Charts gathered data on batting averages by count. This table/data demonstrates how much more difficult it is for hitters when in 2 strike counts in comparison to more "hitter friendly" counts, as a higher batting average demonstrates a more successful hitter.
